drewp29 Posted July 7, 2018 Report Posted July 7, 2018 So I thought I had come across a good deal on a Brahma 15. Seller said he was trying to determine which version it was, but would send me photos soon. I received these photos. I am confused. The basket doesn't look like anything I have seen related to any Brahma version. The motor only has 2 magnets, and every pic I can find shows that Brahma was a triple stack in all versions. The top plate is definitely thick enough, but it is two plates, which is unlike the pics I have seen of real Brahmas. So, what do you guys think? Is this one of the Robot Underground knock-offs? I honestly think the seller is as confused as I am, and I don't think he is trying to pull a fast one on me. I think he bought it 7-8 years ago under the impression that it was a real Brahma, but he tried to figure out which version it is and couldn't, which is where I am right now. It sort of looks like an Exodus Audio X-15 or Tempest-X motor, but the basket is a mystery.
Hellbilly429 Posted July 9, 2018 Report Posted July 9, 2018 No idea wtf that basket and motor is off of. Looks like a hodge-podge of woofers slapped together, with the Brahma cap and cone slapped on top to make someone think they were getting a high-end woofer. drewp29 Posted July 12, 2018 Author Report Posted July 12, 2018 Thanks, I decided against purchasing it. After a seriously massive amount of research I determined it is most likely a Mk4 Brahma built by Robot Underground. They had leased the rights to the Mk3 design (or so the owner of RU said at the time), which Adire had changed from a 3" to 2.5" coil with a 2 top plate motor. The Adire version, however, had the normal Adire claw basket. The RU drivers pretty much used whatever they had at the time, and from what I can tell from teh interwebz, could have been any style of basket. The RU subs had a lot of problems with coil slap, and had a much lower power handling. I was planning on putting at least 1kW RMS through it, and I highly doubt it would have lasted very long in those conditions. Too bad really, I have been looking for a deal on a real Brahma for awhile since the T/S parameters are almost perfect for a front loaded horn I already have in my home theater. With almost double the X-Max and triple the power handling as the current 15 that I use, I would be able to get some lower distortion output below the tuning frequency of the horn, that is, below 20Hz. Right now the output below 20Hz is attainable without too much driver distress (except at ridiculous levels), but the distortion rises significantly due to the driver being close to x-max. It wants more power too, but I am running about 600W RMS through it and the driver is rated a 500, so I am already pushing the upper boundary a bit. Oh well, maybe someday I'll come across one in the price range I am looking for.
Hellbilly429 Posted July 12, 2018 Report Posted July 12, 2018 What T/S parameters are you looking for? Have you considered finding a basket and motor and having someone like PSI (owner of Fix My Speaker) build a custom recone kit for it? 2018 Honda Civic Sport Hatchback (build in progress) NVX Sound Deadener (Front Doors) Stinger FAST Rings Stock Electrical SSA Evil 6.5's Front Speakers Stock rear speakers MB Quart ONX4.80 speaker amp Rockford Fosgate T-1500bdcp DC Level 4 12" D1 @ 2-ohm Box In Design Stage Stock RadioMy Build Log
drewp29 Posted July 12, 2018 Author Report Posted July 12, 2018 PSI is a great company, and I will probably have them custom build me some subs for the basement, whenever I get around to getting off my keister and actually accomplishing something down there. Either PSI or Stereo Integrity, depending on what PSI can build for me. I picked up an SI ds4-18 a few months back off eBay and am planning adding it in to the upstairs entertainment set-up. Right now I have the 15 inch horn and a sealed 12 just to fill in some frequency response. Swapping out the driver in the horn is just a little pet project, since I endlessly fiddle with things. I just want to see how much more I can get out of it. If I ever come across a Tumult for sale I know it will work in the horn, and will leave little on the table. The basement will be ridiculous though, although ridiculous is relative in the world of BASS.
Hellbilly429 Posted July 12, 2018 Report Posted July 12, 2018 Aint no such thing as loud enough! It's not that I don't have the fabrication skills to build a sub myself, it's more that I would want specific T/S parameters and don't have the necessary knowledge to determine what those would be given the combination of parts involved. Nor do have any contacts that would be able to supply specific parts to achieve that goal. If I were just building a sub with the intent of playing loud and handling a lot of power, sure... It would be fun though!
Hellbilly429 Posted July 13, 2018 Report Posted July 13, 2018 Way to promote your thread bmwking! drewp29, check out the thread he posted, sounds like PSI and AudioFanaticz helped him through getting what he needed for parts. I'm sure PSI can steer you towards the parts you need to match specs of that Brahma. 2018 Honda Civic Sport Hatchback (build in progress) NVX Sound Deadener (Front Doors) Stinger FAST Rings Stock Electrical SSA Evil 6.5's Front Speakers Stock rear speakers MB Quart ONX4.80 speaker amp Rockford Fosgate T-1500bdcp DC Level 4 12" D1 @ 2-ohm Box In Design Stage Stock RadioMy Build Log
