Harobmx21 Posted May 10, 2020 Report Posted May 10, 2020 Okay so I've look around quite a bit and cant find a soild answer. Is battery reserve needed for when you can't supply enough amps to keep voltage up? Basically I have an xs ds3400 and a singer 320amp alt currently with two skar rp3500s. My question is should I get more alts that exceeds my demand? Do I need more another battery if I run a second alt? Can the alts be different size? Say one 500 an the other 320 or do they have to match?
1point21gigawatts Posted May 10, 2020 Report Posted May 10, 2020 Whatever the alternator can’t deliver, it pulls from the batteries. You do not need another alternator. Just get another battery or 2. If throw a bank or 2 of capacitors in there too for quick delivery and reload to keep voltage up. But really all you need is another battery or 2. “How can we help you?” “And don’t forget to tell them that the customer isn’t always right.”
liteblue Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 my basic understanding is you want Amp Hours in Battery + Availible alternator current = Amperes requested by equipment. its probably overkill but simple to remember. If you have the room for a second alternator totally go for it, it will make your electrical stronger. you can totally mix and match sizes as long as they put out same voltage. so if you have two 3500 w amps = 7000 watts 7000 watt / 13.8 charge volt = 507 amps / .6 for efficiency = 845 amp draw from the 2 amps. 320 amp is a BIG alternator, say you most likely have 220 amps available to accessories. 845 - 220 = 625 amp hours in batteries.
