I just spent another 3 hours working on the midgate and feel like I made little to no progress. I got all the mounting figured out and then spent forever trimming extra fiberglass off the back of the midgate with a dremel so that the box will mount flush. It just sucks to work that long and have so little to show for it.

It's alright, man. (Or Mang or whatever the people from Cali say. )

It will be worth it in the end.

off to a good start... i would put fiberglassin somewhere in the topic title so gp2k2 or lsn2meboom916 or coogle or some of our other glassin pros can stop by and give some tips

I am here (for what that's worth)

I have little to say thus far...because everything looks kosher up to this point...I'd like to see some pics of the "dremmel work" and "trimming" just so see how "close" it's trimmed.

It really looks good so far tho bro, keep it up.

It is a tight fit. It is a mold of the factory midgate which will attach to the factory mounts and hinges, then bolt the box to that.

I like this idea/method. Nice job.

I'm lookin forward to seein how this ends up.

I feel ya bro.

I been hand sanding and the pics are no biggy even tho it's like hrs+hrs+hrs of labor.

That's the name of the game tho...keep it up, so far everything looks good to go. Keep snappin pics....especially of the fitment and the use of the stock mounts sounds interesting.

Quick question.... Would I be ok to use body filler versus kitty hair? I know kitty hair is stronger but are there any other pros or cons? With 10 plus layers of resin and mat would I be ok with body filler?

depends on WHERE it's going.

If it is an area that will see lots of pressure or vibration I'd say use kitty hair filler and then filler in over that to finish in all the holes (kitty hair filler almost always crates lots of gaps/holes to fill).

If it's purely cosmetic, then just filler would be fine.

In eiather case you should mix in resin with your filler (about 20% resin, 80% filler) so that it will self level and save you a bunch of time on sanding.

Any time my man.

I should also add...

I have "been instructed" by some "pros" directly (said to me) and indirectly (I read it in someone else's build log as they were told to do it)

"You will need to mix in both the filler hardener AND the resin hardener"........

HOWEVER!

Dats a load of crap from my exp.

I have done it BOTH ways and the only "advantage" if you can call it that, is that you can mix everything "cooler" or "lighter" on the hardener/s...but you will run out of BOTH sooner....

I had originally heard this trick WITHOUT the mention of using resin hardener AND filler hardener so I just started using the 80/20 rule and using ONLY the filler hardener...

FOR ME PERSONALLY....that seems to be the best mix and provide a quick set time, low to med tackiness and it alllows the bubbles to surface and "pop" so you have less pinholes to putty later.

Just my way of doing it here in the cali summer heat and "almost" cold winters...you do what works best for you.

And git crackin! :P
