I'm sure I've seen this here on SMD but can't find a pic, but should a layer of fiberglass matte/resin be done on the whole a-pillar plastic before gluing the the wooden framework for the speakers to it? Is that done to strengthen the plastic panel itself, or maybe it was to seal it off when done to make the mid sound better? Any ideas?

i may be wrong but i've done that technique in the past for a foundation. resin adhered better to it that way when glassing the pods.

Thanks, and that cloth has to be spray glued to the plastic panel before it gets resin? 3M adhesive spray or something similar?

**I'm getting ready to try my first a-pillar pods for a mid and tweet and might as well do 'em the right way!

you could 3m it, but if you rough the pillars up with some 80 grit sand paper, and stretch the fleece or other cloth your using tightly over it. saturate it with resin and the resin should go right through the cloth.

Thanks again, so the resin will soak through the cloth, and adhere to the sanded plastic pillar on it's own. Ok, that'll work for me!

It's actually the same as doing a set of kicks...so you're prolly gonna wanna 'swiss cheese' the OEM panel...drill lottsa 1/4' holes prior to adding resin/material...or b4 you just resin it...the holes will allow the resin to seep tru the part and "around back" of that part and hold it more securely/bond the new material to the oem panel better. This will also strengthen the base/oem panel and minimize warpage...if you do it right.

tonns of pics of this method in the fiberglass section...just look in a build for any set of kicks that utilizes the oem kick panel.

better go look at the pics again. That was just the BASE of the pillars. There is grill cloth and then fiberglass mat on the actual formed product.

Steve! Come back....Now you got me confused. I'm talking about just the base, not the end product ....did you add grill cloth and matte over the top of that white fleece/cloth that is on the pillar plastic?

Looks like you just glued the white fabric to the pillar, then resin it, then built the woodwork, then stretch fabric over it all, resin/matte, bondo, sand???
