So everybody can buy the color they like :lol:

:rolleyes::P

Red tops will give out a lot quicker when deep cycling, compared to a yellow top. Yes, it can be done, but, you may need another battery within a year.

my thoughts exactly

I thought it had something to do with the plates inside the batts. The thicker the plates the better they are for deep cycle use. I read about a question like this somewhere, and some one broke it down that far.

although redtops use the same plate formation as yellow tops... they have a lower internal resistance in order to dish out more power at one time instead of over a long period of time...ie why this battery is used mainly for starting...

i tried to explain this same difference to someone on another forum but they insisted that yellow and red tops were equal :rolleyes:<_<

I read this some months back on the12volt and it was pretty interesting. These guys really broke it down.

Optima Red Top vs Yellowtop

that thread was interesting... but didnt solve anything...

as far as deep cycling goes, i have no doubt that the red top has the ability, but how many times can it take that type of punishment...even OPTIMA themselves say not to use a redtop for deep cycling purposes...although the red top and yellow top have the same spiral cell construction, the plates in the yellow top would have to be thicker than the red tops in order to withstand MORE deep cycles...

i think alot of people get confused because of the fact that they are built the same way... but a question that and obswervation that would solve this question is:

OBSERVATION: most people who use opimas have a red top under the hood and yellow tops in the trunk... right?

QUESTION: if they are so sure that red tops are equal to yellow tops, why dont you ever see red tops in the trunk?

I'LL TELL YOU WHY, CUZ PEOPLE KNOW THAT THEY ARE NOT MEANT FOR DEEP CYCLING LIKE THE YELLOW TOPS...(thats just my own answer but this question is open to anyone who can dispute it)

maybe a coincidence but every time ive tried to use a redtop in a stereo enviroment, it has died......my yellow tops have always lasted the entire time until i replaced them for other reasons (for better batts etc).

I have a red top and have been beating on it for about a year now.

Those little foam circles on top, the one nearest to the positive post starts to bubble up sometimes after long periods of use and there is little corrosion spots on the frame of my car right near it, about an inch or two away from that I believe. Im taking it back to battery warehouse to see what the owner can do for me.

But why is it that my car can only charge up to like 14.5-14.6 volts max? I see tons of other people in the mid to upper 15's with their setups? Is it just that Optimas cannot charge that high or is mine just worn the fuck out?

14.5 is a GREAT charge......some of us have MLA modules that make the alt do 15 ;)
