calvin_115 Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I have a Sony Xplod XM-D9001GTR shipping to my house soon. I'll be using it to power two premier 1207 12's in my bedroom.. I also have three computer psu's which two have already been dead for some unknown reason (not doa). So a friend of mine says I can use the psus series-parallel the 5volt and the 12v rails together adding to 17 volts. So, can the xplod handel it? Or it'll just fry? And this might be a noob question but I'm new here lol. Btw don't tell me the amp is overrated as it is not. It's CEA-2006 Compliant heh . Mids/Highs: stock Bang & Olufsen Lows: Image Dynamics IDMax 12v.3 Power: Sony Xplod XM-D9001GTR:Knukonceptz 4 gauge Box: 1.75 cu/ft Sealed Past: Pioneer Premier TS-W1207 (2)/ Rockford Fosgate P210/ Image Dynamics ID10V.3/ Infinity Reference 311A/ Audiopipe AP-18001D
Torres Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 yeah newer sony amps are CEA compliant. but no...i would not put them on 17 volts anyday.
Boon Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 1. Computer PSU will never supply enough current for a decent sized amp... unless it's a PCP&C Turbo 1kw or something... 2. How do you plan to wire it to get 17v? Computer PSUs have a shared ground for a start, so you can't series the rails... the only way to do it would be to use the -5v rail (if your PSU has one) as the ground to get 17v but then you get maybe 0.5A tops. 10.x volts fo' life!

I've seen on YouTube some dude powering a 15" kicker l7 in his room with an alpine 1000wrms amp with three cheapo psus. And I have done something similar in the pass with a rf p2 and an infinity amp. It worked perfect but I had a shit box which isn't even MDF..
