how to make a mold

Recommended Posts

When you are making a mold to fiberglass later (say for a kick panel or whatever), what do you use. You lay tape down and then do you just apply resin? Ive seen this done before on other posts

  • 4 weeks later...

when you make a mold and you want an easy release when your fiberglassing is all done and dry, what do you apply.

For instance, if you are trying to make a mold in your trunk, and you lay down tape and then foil and some more tape (if you wanted to). well then you would start applying the fiberglass onto the taped off area. But when you are all done it is usually hard and long to get the mold to come out and off. What do you apply to the masking tape before you start to fiberglass to ensure that it will be easier when you are all done and going to take the mold out. I have heard WD-40... and also, applying this does not make it harder or make it different when you start to apply the resin and fiberglass?

i mean some kind of spray or something to make it easy for you to seperate your mold from the area that you made a mold from (but the area would eb taped off ofcourse because you would not want to apply fiberglass to your carpet or paneling in your car to make the mold.

I dont personally use any. If you build the bottom mould/tub strong enough before you try to pull it, it'll withstand a whole lotta pullin. I always have a mdf section to pull on like the outer ring i'm glassin to usually.

However, "release agents"= PAM (non stick spray for cooking), PVA (silicone based I believe), White lithium (thats pretty thick so spray some then paint it around to stretch and thin it out over the trunk/area) or silicon spray=same. Teflon spray also.

Hope that helps.

Search PVA Spray on yahoo or google.
