98HOEONSIXEZ Posted September 13, 2008 Report Posted September 13, 2008 Just wondering if there is a general rule of thumb,or a % an amp gains when going down in ohms.. . okay no amp to be specific but just making one up to use as an example.. . .Lets say you have an amp that puts out 1000 watts rms at 2 ohms,then 2000 watts at one ohm,. . .say if you wired it down to .75 or .50 or .25 how do you calculate how many more watts your getting?I know that the amp has to be stable to go down that low.This "example amp" that i made up lets just say its stable to .25 ohms.And we have a steady 14 volts to supply it with.So the question is what % of watts are you going to go down each step in ohms you go?or does it always vary? thanks jprice

Boon Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 No. You don't know how the amp will respond to lower impedance - the efficiency of an amp rapidly decreases at low loads and it's not linear... no way to know without trying it. 10.x volts fo' life!
