Whats up fellas? Long time lurker....found this place on FGF...

Anyways I have myself a 2001 Protege MP3 that I got a little system in. 2 RE SE 10's in a sealed fiberglass box at somewhere near a cube each in their separate airspaces. I have a Audiobahn A1500HCT running them. My current charging system is..you guessed it..stock alt with a red top with 1/0 feeding the amp.

My stock alt is 80 amps...and this amp really kills it I think. The problem I have is that apparently the voltage is regulated by the cars ECU, and people say that you cant install a HO alt becuase it will cause problems. There are rumors that you can install some sort of voltage regulator from a Ranger and do it. However, I get all my info on this stuff from some Mazda forums and I would rather get it from people who know shit about charging systems. So I figured I would ask you guys. Have you ever heard of anything like this? Are there common ways to get around it?

Id love to upgrade the amp and get an extra battery and port the REs...

I havent done the big 3..It is the first thing I plan on doing when I get home from school. However I know that I shouldnt be running 2k watts on an 80 amp alt. I dont think the big 3 will cut it.

Your stock alt came as a 70 (1.6 liter)or 80 (2.0 liter)amp alt. We (MLA) can get you some higher voltage for your stock or HO alt application. And yes it is controlled by your cars computer so even with a HO alt your voltage will still be low.

Let us know,

MLA

The voltage is controlled by the ECM on your vehicle. We offer a large case conversion alternator that uses a conventional style regulator so that the computer is bypassed, and standard 14.7V setpoint is used. The unit produces 250 amps with 150 at idle.

Im guessing bypassing the ECU would throw a CEL...and unfortunately I gotta get inspected tho...

Got ways around the CEL?
