Fish Chris Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 I know a lot of guys here love "LOUD" but still want the system to sound at least somewhat musical. Then I know their are a few guys like myself, that want an SQ system, but still want it to be somewhat loud. So, the question is, are their any points whatsoever, given for an SPL system that actually sounds good ? And furthermore, in the typical SQ contest, doesn't the system have to hit "at least" a certain DB level (I have know idea what that might be ... 130 db's ?) to qualify ? I mean, I don't care how clean it is, it should still be loud enough to play over road / engine noise, huh ? Just curious. I'm thinking that if I could have a very nice SQ system, that could still hit 140db's, I'd be pretty happy with that..... I know it wouldn't win any SQ, or SPL contests, but then that's never been my goal anyway..... Thanks, Fish
Fish Chris Posted November 18, 2008 Author Report Posted November 18, 2008 Nobody here knows contest rules / procedures ? I thought we had a few guys here who actually judged them ? Fish
HHR Ed Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 Nobody here knows contest rules / procedures ? I thought we had a few guys here who actually judged them ?Fish In pure SPL competition it does not matter how clean it sounds. You can have 100% distortion and it wouldnt matter. In pure SQ competition you do need a good RTA score, that is where you low end matches the spl of the mid range and high end. So a flat response from 20hz to 20k hz is what you want. If your subs do 130 dB, your tweeters better do 130 dB also. There is also something called SQL. The goal here is to have the loudest, undistorted SPL. This isnt as popular or well known about though. Fish Chris Posted November 19, 2008 Author Report Posted November 19, 2008 Thank you HHR Ed, but now, just because your subs "can play at 130db's"..... Why ? Why not just turn your gains way down, to where they are only putting out a measley 110db's ? You know it's going to be clean as can be, and easy to keep up with, for your mids + highs. I mean, if db's mean 'zero' in an SQ competetion, it doesn't seem like it would make sense to push any portion of the system hard. Anyway, personally speaking, I guess I lean towards SQL {even though I think that is kind of a dumb abreviation.... Sound Quality, and Sound Quality Level should mean the same thing. To me, SQ+SPL explains it better, even if it takes a few more letters :-) Peace, Fish In pure SPL competition it does not matter how clean it sounds. In SQ, why not just turn down the subs to match the mids and tweets. Thats exactly what you want to do. There also used to be a format called SQ +, what happened there was you went through a normal SQ judging format, then you would turn your bass up and get an SPL reading and the 2 scores were factored in. maybe thats more of what you want.
