you should check your settings in the burn section....maybe it sounds distorted because the song has its on volume and when you burn it the computer it doesnt fix or levels the volume...so it just burns it with the volume that the song came with..

mp3 or burned cd = degredated music ...if you ipofds louder its a setting or a burning selection

way too many variables... an AAC file can have the same amount of distortion as a burned cd copy/MP3/WMA

the likelyhood is ipod is using volume normalizing and eq as said before

i will always use mp3 lossless/vbr over anything else
