Small Subs With Huge Motors ?

I just saw those 12" subs posted by ssackett !!! ....and I've seen lots of other smaller subs (10"s and 12"s) in the past that had HUGE motor assemblies, magnets, voice coils, etc. Then, almost always, you will see the 15"s and 18"s in that same series of speakers, with the same exact motor assebmbly ???

I understand that this makes production cheaper.... but isn't their any correlation between cone size, and motor size ???

Or to ask it another way, why would someone use a 12" subwoofer with a motor assembly rated at say, 3000 wts rms, and a 4" voice coil, etc, etc, when they could use the same motor assembly with a 15" cone attached to it, and move a lot more air ? (except maybe to save on enclosure space)

Are their any other advantages of using a smaller sub, with a giant motor, over a bigger sub, with the same giant motor ???

Some classes require a certain size subwoofer I think for competitions

a lot of times people like to see what they can do with just 1 12" woofer or 1 10" woofer etc.

You have to remember many vehicles differ in size. If I could fit an 18 BTL or even a 15 BTL in my trunk without some sort of intense box I would. I opted for the 12" BTL that way I have the best box and its not all rigged up just to fit.

Im currently running 4 of these custom built 10's and because of space issues with my BTL 15's I wasn't able to get a box I wanted in there so in turn I wasn't getting the sound I wanted. So in my case, my 4 10's are actually noticeably louder than the 15's I had. Im not sure if that pertains to ur question so sorry I just thought I would share some info.
