Are My Sub Calculations Correct ?

Okay, so the pair of 12"s I have right now will give me about 225 sq inches. But these subs only have an x-max of 15.1 mm's.

So the pair of 12"s will move about 134 cubic inches, with a full throw.

Now the thing is, these were cheap subs (ED 13Kv.2's) that I just got as a "good bang for the buck" sub to get started with... and boxes are easy anyway :-)

So, I'm already looking down the road for when I destroy those, and so far, my next choice will be a single 15" Fi Q.

Now, that sub will only give me 177 sq inches of surface area.... However, the x-max of this sub is listed as a whopping 27 mm's ! Which calculates out to be moving 188 cubic inches of air, per throw !

An increase of 28% ! Pretty substantial..... Not to mention, that I will be running my 12"s at a 2 ohm load, which will let my amp produce 705 watts, while if I go to the single 15" Fi Q, I'll run it at a 1 ohm load, and my amp will produce 935 watts.

Would you think that a 28% increase in air volume movement, along with a 25% increase in wattage, would make a noticeable difference in output ? In other words, would this one 15" be louder / move more air than the two 12"s ?

I'd like to think a Fi Q would be at least "as clean" as the ED's, but maybe a little cleaner ? (both being in a factory recommended enclosures of course)

Nobody wants to take a guess ?

The two 12"s with the shorter throw, or the one 15" with the longer throw (x-max)...

Which will be louder ? Which will be cleaner ?

the 2 12's have more cone area which you want. that's all i know.

I guess what I'm asking KK is, will the longer throw of the 15" negate the larger surface area of the two 12"s ? As I said, the 15" will actually displace a higher volume of air with a single throw + 25% more power.... Then it comes down to ED (which I guess is more of an SQ type of sub, and not much attention / respect for them on this forum) vs. Fi......

but remember the sub will rarely approach 27mm one way unless below tuning likely, xmax is one of many factors that come into play when asking if something is louder

27mm with loose suspension will sound sooo much different then 27mm with tight stiff suspension

a digital designs sub might not move as much but im gonna bet its louder than most subs while moving less... too many factors

id rather have the q tho.. dont care for ed, plus its more power
