Installing Larger Battery Under The Hood

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is an electrical or modification question, but it's about installing a new battery so I'm posting here.

I'm wanting to put a larger battery under the hood of my 01 tahoe than a red top/yellow top, and I was wondering if anyone has any advice on where or how to move the PCM that is right next to where the battery sits?

If that was out of the way I could put practically whatever I wanted. After looking in the Haynes manual I can see how to remove it, just wondering if there's a simple way to do this instead of having to use a smaller battery.

Thanks!

well steve has a 3100 under his hook and they caddy, so hopefully he chimes in for you!

btw, good playing with you the other night. bout time u got in on some ps3 action lol

I saw where he posted some pics of itin there from a distance, but he didn't give any real tutorial or advice on it. Trying to keep a few secrets? :D

I know, that's the first time I've been on in months and months. I saw where you sent me an invite before too, but I had turned it on and then been called away by the wife :( I hope to be on a bit more- sorry I don't have a headset working but that was fun as hell.

You can move the PCM as far as the harness will let you, with a few points to consider.

1) Heat. That computer needs cooling, and it was placed accordingly. I would not move it closer to a heat source like an exhaust manifold, or reorient it to compromise airflow. Some PCM's use natural convection to move air past the heatsink, others use airflow inside the engine compartment.

2) Grounding.

Most PCM's control things by providing a ground path. Fuel injectors are hot at the injector, and fired by grounding @ the PCM. So are many other functions. Be sure that you provide a good ground, and replace any ground wires you remove.

Now, if you plan to remount the PCM under the back seat & extend the harness... you have one hell of a job ahead.

Post a pic of your particular PCM location & mounting so we can look at the issues with you.

Thanks for the tips. I wasn't planning on relocating it much farther than a few inches if possible, I just know it's sort of sensitive so I didn't want to man handle it any more that necessary. I will get some good pictures tonight as soon as I get home. Thanks!

just unbolt it and push it over a few inches out of the way. Mine isnt even re-bolted it just kinda holds itself up...if you move it around with your hands you will see there isnt really any place it can "fall" because it has so many wires hooked up to it. The D3100 will fit but you will probably need to also pull back the rubber gasket thing right there by the fender and cut the metal a little. I just make a few "relief cuts" and bend it down out of the way. Its pretty easy really....
