thegr8cody Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 so i bought a 3rd door sonoma and i have about 14.3 cubic ft before displacement. thats just a straight box if i wedge it i can get more if needed but i wanna keep it simple. right now i have a dd 9518 and the minimum is 5 cubic ft and 80 si port but my buddy is running the 9515s in 5.3 cubic ft and 100 si port and doing good numbers so im wondering if thats to small for the 18's and will i be able to make it up with extra power or should i just do like 4 15's with about 3 cubic ft a piece i was thinking aq sd2.5 with about 800 - 1000 rms on each one 1998 gmc sierra h/u:eclipse cd3200 sub:dd9518g d1.5 amp:jl e300/4 sub amp:dd m2a front stage:id ctx65cs dc power 270 alt lots of kicker 1/0
Nightshade Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 5 cubes isn't small for an 18. Iirc Steve runs his btl's in around 4 cubes each. I would say that you could start around 5-5.5 and shrink down the box as need be. With 80sqin of port and 5 cuft that comes out to be 16 sqin per cuft. If your trying for a daily system that's a little high in port area, but if your in it for numbers then that's a good place to start. You can eventually add port area if need be too. What is your overall goal with the build? Spl, daily, or a loud daily driver. You can't always have both because if your going for straight spl you have to tune the enclosure high in order to get the kind of numbers that the vehicle wants to play. Then daily is the opposite because it needs to be tuned lower so it has a flater response to accomidate your listening needs. It's kind of hard to get the middle of the road but is achievable if you don't mind tuning in the 39-46hz range. You can still get great response with a nice roll of in the range as well as being musical. Boon Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 DD's love small boxes but only if you have lots of power on them. Your 9518's will laugh at 800wrms. They come alive at about 2-3kwrms per woofer. That said, a small box for a DD 18 is like 4-5 cubes. 7 cubes per woofer is plenty. 10.x volts fo' life!
