mr.p Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Ok so originally my plan was buy a jbl crown amp and run these hybrid aura nrt18's. They have the neo radial motor and those really cool looking coils that are wound like a slinky not sure the technical name for these. The upgrades these have over the prosound that uses this motor are: anodized aluminum cone, flat 3 rib surround, woven tinsel leads, high temp very beautiful looking coil dual nomex spiders and a stronger former. These fixed the pro sound drivers downfalls of collapsing the paper cone, tinsel slap, and smoking coils... the problem lies in the only coil we had on hand that would fit were the 2 prototype coils. SINGLE 4 OHM!!! and it will not be till mid febuary when my friend goes to china that i will be able to get a dual 2 godo coil custom wound, and a tall roll surround. so the plan is to use MMats transformers, which are made to run on the d3500 amps. Run 2 paralell to each subwoofer and one of my HD4000's so the two will split 4kw for each amp. Otherwise they might overheat and short out which is KIA for the amps. The thing is...these things are 300$ for 4 but they are a 4-1 reduction in ohm load. So they will work, the questions i have are, is this safe? the tinsel lead on the woofer is not very beefy how much of a chance is there that i melt the solder? Has anyone used the autoformer or transformer type or equivalent? Or, does anyone here have any home theatre, prosound expierience that could possibly find me a Coil offhand that will fit the gap and what not... what i would like to do is get the driver reconed, with a tall roll surround stitched into a carbon fiber cone, with some extra spiders, and dual or quad tinsels and a beefy F^%@#$@ coil. A more conventional flatwound copperclad alluminum coil. Not this slinkeewound golden coil crap. let me know if im all screwed up yet or not. the reason im using these 18's is i already have them, and wont have enough money to get new woofers for autorama....and 2kw at 2ohm sucks :| so recap...solder on tinsel leads.....recone my driver?....reliability of autoformers?.... Forevrbumpn Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Big problem on edge wound coils They are not meant for SPL, long durations of bass tones, they will fry, and melt, and then you want a huge amp on them coils, NOT gonna work at all...... Its basically a 1 layer coil, thats it, and the wire is laid flat side ways, thats why the coil looks like its a super fine wire This is why PA speakers are not meant for SPL conditions, they are meant for fast quick bursts of realistic bass, not exagerated bass tones and what is autoformers? I then start to hum the T2 theme. Slowly I rise to a standing position and open my eyes. It helps me get through my day. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It sorta ruins the fantasy.
mr.p Posted January 6, 2009 Author Report Posted January 6, 2009 EDGEWOUND you are god thank you i forget the term...unfortunately im not 100% sure it has edgewound coils, because i dont know which he actually put in the drivers...and i dont know which pair of drivers i have :\ i know it sounds crazy but we assembled 2, 2 with a standardish coil, and 2 with the edgewound coils. either way i need to find a way to fit a fat ass spl coil in these things :s Quote DCAUDIO BALLS DEEP

I was told that directly by the voice coil manufacturer that makes coils for everything from 0.5"- 6" coils for home, car, PA use. I wanted to use ths design myself in some OEM build, and had money in hand, but they talked me out of it, and explained why Edgewound coils being only a 1 layer conducts heat extremely fast, there is GREAT characteristics affiliated with edgewound, but not good for heavy use or excessive power Quote I have a ritual called "terminator". Noobtastic14 Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 i'd rather have working woofers on 1kw each than blown woofers on 4kw each seems like a sales pitch from mmats to me, they got you for those amps why not another couple hundred on those?? if you spend the cash on those you'll need more bats and wires and alt(s) that you don't have the $ for right now.
