External Regulator ?

I have a question about external regulators. If i get an alternator i can get a external regulator and have it set to 14.6v then 15.6v for when ever i need some extra power for comps, and just demoing right? but wouldn't the cars computer react to that and bring the voltage back down or no? the MLA module overrides the cars PC to allow this to happen right and then regulates the voltage correct? I know the MLA would be great with a internal regulated alternator but isnt needed for a external regulated alternator or is it?

I just dont know if i should buy the MLA module (pro series 14.6v low side and 15.6v hi side) or get an alternator with a ext. reg...

Well if you have an external regulator on your alt, it would take the place of the PCM in the circuit for regulation. As far as MLA goes, your PCM will regulate the voltage before it hits the MLA so it can do its work after the fact and not affect the PCM no matter the voltage.

I think you'll do just fine with a dual volt MLA. It works wonderfully.

I noticed in your sig you have a ? after 16V. Why is that?

i got a external regulator that i can dial what ever voltage i want from (14-20) volts. not hooked up yet but all the wires are ran.

Well if you have an external regulator on your alt, it would take the place of the PCM in the circuit for regulation. As far as MLA goes, your PCM will regulate the voltage before it hits the MLA so it can do its work after the fact and not affect the PCM no matter the voltage.

I think you'll do just fine with a dual volt MLA. It works wonderfully.

my sig shows im going to have..i have about 65% of the stuff in the sig

and i see now..going external can actually save money but MLA will help in stock form until the upgraded alternator can be purchased..

Well remember it only increases your voltage and nothing else. It's not a substitute for a HO alt or battery. Until you get a new alternator, excessive current draw can still eat up whatever you have making the module seemingly ineffective. But it's a necessary addition to a strong electrical system.

with my batteries charged im in the mid 12's far as volts(full tilt) with walmart everstart marine batteries(4 of them) and i currently have a 200 amp alternator..it keeps up with it "okay" it seems when my alternator heats up it doesnt put out as much power when its cold(low 13's full tilt)

and i see now..going external can actually save money but MLA will help in stock form until the upgraded alternator can be purchased..

If your goals are set to have a high output alt and a externally regulated alt, You will be throwing $200+ away to buy a MLA for your stock alt, when you can put that money towards a good alt that puts out more amps.

Im not sure what voltage a MLA can be programmed to work at (but Im pretty sure the can be made for whatever you want)

That statement is kind of false. Im pretty sure the MLA overrides the stock excitement of your alternator. If you can have a MLA module built to charge at 18 volts for example, your whole car will be running at that voltage (lights, ecm, tranny, coil, anything electric). The MLA will not allow your stock electrical gear to remain normal voltages, and can be damaging to those components just as an externally regulated alt.

But, by all means say if you are in meades position where he has his 4 iraggi 300amp alternators that are internally regulated, and you feel you want a some more power out of your setup buy the MLA module. Or if your never planning on upgrading to a new alt or your not interested in a external regulator buy the MLA module.

Id say for more of a street beater type of person MLA ftw. But if your in the lanes and are a serious competitor looking for that upper edge go externally regulated.

Yes, I know the whole car would see the voltage unless you had a completely separate charging system, but in my car, the PCM regulates the voltage and I only have one alt. I guess I just assumed it was that way in all cars.
