I might be buying a 10 inch JBL (or something like that), in an enclosure. I want to be able to use it in my house, but I don't have an amp for it. Would it be possible to power it solely off a power plug? How could I do this?

Sure you can, you just need a bunch of transistors to modulate the electricity based on the music input.

You'll also need to rectify and filter the mains and it might be nice if you stepped it down to a more usable voltage first.

Oh hang on............. that's what an amplifier does ;/

Alright now I have a really weird question. Basically I don't have a car right now and my parents won't let me get subs in ours. What about having some kind of home subwoofer in a car? Like those Logitechs. I know it sounds weird but it's all I can do right now.

You can do anything you want big man!!!!!!

.. But :) Can be a waste of money. A home sub is most likely active. (it has an amplifier built into it)

Truth is that they are more efficient than a car sub (passive), as for a car sub and amp you get power from a low voltage battery, which means that as the power travels through wires, some of it is lost unfortunately.

but we don't have a power point in our car to plug the sub woofer into :(

So just wait till you're old enough to get a set of wheels i'd say. By all means go out and buy some gear but!

My tip... Get a sub and make a swish box for it. That's where all the talent is at! Anyone can connect wires :)

You can probs test it out at ya local car audio store, then when you got a car... you got a sub! Add an amp and some wires, whammy!

I know when i was young i spent money on crap that just doesn't work... (i.e. trying to power a car amp off a phone charger in my room :) )

So read up, save your pennys and get into it!

PM if you got any questions mate

I was referring to running it at 200 watts, which is 50 above the RMS. Do you guys think that will be okay?

Also apparently the two regular speakers I'm getting have to go into the amp too. What kind of amp would allow me to hook up the subwoofer and the two speakers all at once; how would I be able to make sure that the proper wattages go to all the components?
