Remote Not Cutting Amp Off?

ChevyBoy

Recommended Posts

no, the switch is there so i can shut the amp off completely whenever i want.

so every now and then, when my head unit shuts down, my amp doesnt turn off. i tried switching head units, does the same thing. when the head unit doesnt shut it off, i flick the toggle on my remote and it shuts down. today it wouldnt shut down for a few minutes, so i took a meter to it. it read -.5 volts at the remote terminal on the amp. yes, thats right, negative. how? anyone have any input? im stumped.

So basically the HU sometimes has this problem. A switch is there so you can turn it off whenever. Suddenly, it doesn't work and you are reading voltage on the remote wire.

I blame the switch then. I didn't understand what you were asking since the thread went all over the place.

how can the switch be the problem when there is no power running to it since the head unit is off?`

Because you specifically said that sometimes the HU doesn't cut off the power. Hence the switch.

like i just told earthman in the chat, a switch doesnt produce voltage, therefor, the switch cant be the problem

No, but a trickle voltage from the HU whether it be from the HU or grounding out going through a bad switch would produce the problem. You said that sometimes the HU doesn't kill the amp. There's the first problem. And a switch suddenly stops turning the amp off... You're reading voltage at the amp... That's most likely a bad switch (aside from the first problem of not shutting off).

that makes no sense. the head unit "shouldnt" leak voltage. there is no way the switch is bad. whenever i shut it off, the amp shuts off.

Damn it. That first post is very misleading. You made it sound like after flicking the switch, the amp wouldn't turn off for a few minutes.

Ugh...lost in translation.

have you tryed taking the switch out just for the sake of process of elimination. Im seeing alot of these guys try to help but it seems like your opposed to trying anythign the tell you.

thats kinda why i left it alone the other night, you kinda came off as if it wasnt somethign you thought it should be then you werent going to try any suggestions

I still say it's something between the switch and HU.

Run an entirely new 'exposed' remote wire with the harness exposedas well. That should eliminate the problem. If it doesn't, then I don't know what to tell you considering you tried two different HUs with different harnesses.

And another thing I've experienced, if you have a battery in the back and it's dead, then I guarantee that's the problem.
