ChevyBoy Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 (edited) well i've been wanting to do this since about november. i had a prefab box and a cheap throw together box in my truck all down firing. im going to be fiberglassing the bottom of the box thats going under my back seat. the rest is going to be made of 3/4 mdf. the center console is going to be mostly 3/4 mdf and some fiberglassing for the ports. its going to take me a little while and all advice/pointers/criticism is welcome. i tapped of the floor for the most part. im guessing i need to put down the foil for a mold correct? ill be starting the fiberglassing on saturday. i have some drop cloth to lay down to not get any resin anywhere. any advice for anything else? edit: if you guys cant tell, this is going into my 97 chevy ext cab. LSN2meBoom916 Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Shweet dude! welcome to the FG club. advice-TAPE/FOIL/MASK off a LOT more than that! Fiberglass resin is RUNNY and THICK-from the look of the angle your floor board is, it'll find is way right to the edge of that tape and screw up your carpet hardcore. I always foil/tape a much bigger area than needed cuz better safe than sorry. Resin is A BIATCH to try to ge toff upholstry/carpet. Also I'd do a layer of something liquid proof like foil so it doesn't soak thru the tape onto/into the carpet and NEVER come out. Just my advice/2 cents. Keep us posted w/ the progress. ChevyBoy Posted March 8, 2007 Author Report Posted March 8, 2007 the subs will be (4) rockford fosgate rfd2210's. that pic of the sub above is a rfd2110. same everything but different coils. the amp is a power acoustik a3000db. the way i want to mount the subs under the seat are upfiring, having a ring inside the box, mounting the sub to the ring, and having another ring on top of the baffle to keep the seat up so the subs doesnt hit it. heres a quick sketch on paint the boxes are going to be port. this is the reason why im redoing both boxes. the orignals were sealed and i know the hx2's perform best in ported. atleast mine do. the ports for the box under the seat will hopefully have one on each side (or two) facing under the front seats. the center console will have the port(s) facing the read sliding window. im going to curve the back end of the box, make a couple of rings, and fiberglass them into the corner. im hoping to use aero ports since i cant use a slot port. let me know how you guys think it'll sound/be.

Seems good so far though, BTW nice sub you got there. 4 15" FI Q D2's in 12 cubes tuned to 32hz 1- T1000.1bd's 3 Maxx 29 deep cycles 4 runs of 1/0 gauge -Big 3 -Trunk sealed off from the cabin Custom 15.8 dual-volt switching MLA module All in a CAR.

Good luck too. i plan on taping off the rest of the area when i get some more tape/when i foil it. not too worried about the carpet right now since its pretty much shit after 11-12 years being in a TRUCK lol. i might get new carpet when this is done. im still undecided. im gonna get a carpet cleaner from work (for free of course ) and see how that goes. also, i know how runny it can be. ive messed with it before, just never finished a job with it. kinda lost passion since it wasnt something i was going to use. and my buddy who does fiberglass for a living is going to help. so thats good. thanks for the tips though!

Seems good so far though, BTW nice sub you got there. thats an older sub i had. i think my original hx2. thats the dual 2 ohm model, where as i have the (4) dual 4 ohm ones im using. only problem being, is that since i never really checked for clearance that close with the other box i had (center console), i kind of ground away on the surround. i need to get a new one put on, so thats to come. the one on the left, you can see is the one that bottomed out on my floor im guessing.

I know theres a lotta room under chevy seats, but I didn't think there was that much! ChevyBoy Posted March 8, 2007 Author Report Posted March 8, 2007 the box color is supposed to be the color of my truck. duplicolor. i didnt really care about the bottom so i didnt coat it as well. but my floor is sloped downward. that sub was the front one, so it was either hitting the floor, which i know it was a little, or something did get to it and i didn't notice.

I know theres a lotta room under chevy seats, but I didn't think there was that much! im hoping so. the prefabbed box i had, held 2 10s and wasnt fiberglassed. it was all 3/4 mdf. it had a couple inches of room on each side of the box and it was 1.5. i need 1.0 cubes for each sub ported. so ~.8-.9 (sub and port displacement) shouldnt be too hard to pick up with fiberglassing and going to the sides all the way....i hope. the center console im rebuilding will house the other 2. i had plenty of room left in front of me, but im going to make this box go all the way to the front and back of the truck and try and be "flush" in a way with the back box.
