Interesting....though honestly I'm not surprised about the snooping but the overcharging is BS, I would only assume it happens here too. When I sent mine to HP everything was cleared off, cant trust anyone these days

one of those prime time news channels did that a couple years back in New York.

the results were very similar. all the computers needed was to have the IDE cable plugged back into the hard drive, but the repair shops over charged and mis diagnosed the problems.

I run my own on-site and internet troubleshooting IT business and I have come across some pretty nasty shit when trying to fix problems.

I had a client whose computer was running slowly so I run a virus scan real quick see a folder called new folder that has over 20 viruses in it. So me knowing it is mostly likely stuff downloaded illegally I go to see what it was. This guy had over 100 gigs of child porn. So i pretend to keep working and call the police.

But I don't go looking through on the files.

But I have had to fire people because they would connect to someones computer and the client we have has a function were we can pull files from the computer without the client knowing. The people would use that to steal music, movies, documents. This is why everything a tech does is put into a log.

It is hard to find good trustworthy help these days.

Subs are like titties, They need to come in pairs because ones and threes are just wrong, and larger amounts will always draw a crowd, we all have our favorite sizes, but the bigger ones are more fun to watch move. :D

Words to live by.

Some helpful advice. Having been working in computers for 20 some odd years, if you need to take your pc/laptop in for repairs follow these rules if at all possible:

Back your shit up. The repair company (even if its HP or whatever manufacturer) will say they are not responsible for your data. They may even reload the factory software as a troubleshooting measure (bye bye data).

Create a seperate backup of your data (passwords, pictures, turbotax files, etc...) to a external drive, flash drive, cd, dvd, etc... and delete it from the hard drive before you send it in, so even if they do sort through your stuff, they get nothing important.

Never, Never let your web browser cache your passwords.

Back when I used to do end user repairs, we would look through pictures to see if we could find any nakeds, but that was it. We wouldn't hack into shit. We also would not create fake charges like these a$$clowns. If your cable was loose, you would have a labor charge, and that was it. Hell, we would even clean out the dust and clean it up nice so the customer would come back if they had a problem again.

Although what these people are doing is deplorable, people really shouldn't be surprised. Auto repair shops have been doing this stuff for years. You have crooked people everywhere, gotta watch your back.

I busted the screen on my laptop, I've tried plugging in a monitor to it and that worked for a while then one day it just wouldn't work that way. Now how do I back it up from there.

Try another monitor. If it doesn't work, your pretty much screwed. Sorry for the loss.

You can have a pro back it up, but that's expensive.

My comp setup (Not bad for what it is):

HP Compaq Presario V6120US laptop with:

15.4" widescreen

AMD Turion 64 X2 1.6GHz processor

2x1GB stick DDR2 SDRAM (667 Mhz)

Seagate Momentus 500GB SATA HDD

128MB shared video memory

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

12 cell Lithium Ion battery (actual battery usage time: 6 hours)

What it does:

If you have another laptop or computer available, you can pull the hard drive out and use one of these USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adapter it will connect any IDE or SATA hard drive (3.5" and 2.5") to your usb port. Then you can make a backup on the other computer. I always keep one of those on hand, best $23 I ever spent.

It will show up on the computer as just another hard drive and you can copy your files off of it or use a backup utility to backup the whole drive.
