sean 371
i like that method it seems easier. lol its pretty much the same method. and nismo, this is more akin to gas welding than it is to soldering. You just use solder as the metal. ChevyBoy
It's pretty easy, just take a propane torch, heat up the top real good, (make sure you coat the wire with flux before you put it in the terminal), and then start filling the top with solder. Then I like to take the flame to the outside of the terminal, because doing that flows the solder down into the ring, and provides a stronger hold. I use a loot of solder on my terminals. And then I just fill the top in when I'm done, sometimes having to grind off the extra. you're not supposed to put flux on electrical wire. hell, theres not even a need for it? do you even know what flux is used for? roscoe1129
dont plumbers use flux when "soldering" copper pipes to pull the solder in the seams all the way??? ChevyBoy
correct. its used for sweating pipes together so that the solder will flow where the flux is.
sean 371
Exactly. I want the solder flowing down among the wires and all in between the wire and the ring so it basically becomes one solid piece of metal. ChevyBoy
thousands of strands of wire are completely different than a single pipe. on a pipe, you need it to "move" the solder when its applied. it has to move about an inch. when doing a terminal, its right there. its in one spot. it doesnt need to go "around a pipe". it has to flow through the strands of wire. just dont use flux. sean 371
All I know is that it works alot better, at least in my experience. It wouldnt flow down thru the wire without using the flux. That may have been because I was sandwiching 2/0 wire into 1/0 terminals, and was cutting off just enough strands for it to fit. Maybe it would have worked better with the proper sized wire/terminal combination. dleccord
My electrical class used flux and I think it was for cleaning the wire and making solder easier. Quote refs: chode69, superduper
roscoe1129
doesnt most solder come with a flux core anyway these days?? sean 371
I use rosin core flux to do my soldering. It flows across the wire a lot better.
