1/0 power wire question

Recommended Posts

i went to a comercial electric store yesterday and asked about 1/0 gauge copper wire. they said that they can get it from there warehouse and it was only $1.60 a ft. i looked at some 4/0 that he had lying around in the back and it was a fine strand wire, pretty flexable and the copper was the side of my thumb. so the 1/0 would be smaller i know, but the question is, is regular electic/welding wire ok to us for power or is there some big difference between that and audio power wire?

Usually it's strand count. As long as the core itself is the same size, you're good. Strand count makes things more flexible.

also more strands increases surface area for more power holding capabilities

my dad was having his house service upgraded to 200 amps last year. I asked the electrician, he said,"DC current travels on the out side of the wire, AC thru the wire" Then he said, " This is why you want a high strand count". I personally would have never guessed.
