yup i use them....i havent done nearly as much as you and ive never heard them called that before but my very first fiberglass job (rear deck on honda) i used them there as well.  I used the cut out for the blow thru for my cheater plate and when i was done glassing it i pulled it out, cut a hole in it, and wrapped speaker grill around that (used it as a frame) :^

its a great trick   It NOW has a name though
