This is something that I have always wanted to do myself. I even bought a touchscreen laptop to do it with but it is an older model and the backlight is not bright enough... never the less in the process of trying to get everything together I found this front end software that you can use with a carputer with a touch screen. I suppose you can control it all with a remote also with a little tinkering.

The name of the Software is Centrafuse

it is made by fluxmedia and here is a little info on it

it is a decent program, there is a company in Florida that is modifying it to be a bit more "stand alone" along with adding rear entertainment controls.

carputers are getting better, way better, but still has some draw backs.

but the good thing about it is, that the like an iPhone, there is an app for pretty much everything you want

I am still debating on whether or not to put a carputer in my car... I was looking at this little Acer desktop that I could easily convert to run on 12v.

Just need to throw in an external sound card with an optical out and Ill be set.

Centrafuse looks like one of the better applications to run on a Carputer, I have checked out Ride Runner and Media Engine.

Too Much Stuff to list .
