Rear disc brake conversion on an '01 Cherokee

Recommended Posts

Anyone who owns a Cherokee of any year knows that the rear drum brakes are garbage. I definitely know that about mine, which is actually kind of a special model (Limited, 2001 (last year built), skid plates, tow hooks, transmission oil cooler, heavier-duty suspension -- all factory)

I've begun to notice that the rear drums are barely doing any work, so instead of adjusting them and just putting up with it, I decided to swap to rear discs. I'll be using the caliper brackets/backing plates from a '96 Grand Cherokee (have parts in-hand) and the parking brake cables from the older (rounded) Liberty...not the new boxy one. (have those on order at the dealer - should have them in tomorrow) Aside from that, the axle seals, rotors, calipers, lines and pads will all be brand new.

Pics to follow sometime soon...let me know what you think

I did the same thing to my 05 Taurus. Ford stopped making rear calipers for Taurus sedans in 1999. So pieced together a "kit" Calipers , brake cables and ebrake from an 87. Rear knuckles from a 97. I reused the spindles and abs sensors from my drums. Custom drilled rotors and caliper mounting bracket from SHOBros. It all worked out great.. only problem I have was gettin the air out of the lines fully. The dang ABS modulator sucked in a crap load of air some how... I got it out eventually.. Just watch out t can be a pain lol.
