So if I hook up the Alt, will it overcharge my battery because I'm not really using it? I'm an electrical noob so I have no clue... Will the alt quit pumping juice if the battery is full or what? MECHMAN Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 No, an alternator will only generate as much current as is being used by the vehicle at any given time, no matter how much current the alternator is capable of generating. That is assuming that the voltage setpoint of the alternator is appropriate for the type of battery you are using. Flooded batteries like to be charged 14 - 15.3 volt range, AGM batteries like to be charged 14- 14.8 volt range. Alternator charging voltages higher than that can dry our the cells over time, or sometimes even cause the battery to gas and swell. 1-888-MECHMAN www.Mechman.com [email protected]
