Test tone vs Music

how much could i expect to gain on the term lab using a test tone or a sweep instead of music? they sound a good bit louder in my car

With a tone you can play right at your peak freq,

but how much gain depend. i get the same score with a song that peaks right where my car peaks

that's the only real way to find out. I gain .9dB's and another guy on my team only gains .3dB's. I've heard of set ups gaining 1.5 or more, but I assume they aren't playing the right song...

you will also have more impedence rise with a tone

True, but you also get more power out of your amp with tones, since it is not dynamic like music is.

So like others said before you can gain a 1/4 DB or even up to 2 or 3 Db's in some situations.

i gain like 2 db's at peak fq

well if u are referring to using a 0db sine wave then it should always be louder since its constant it allows the pressure to build easier

and at 0db u are going to get the most power out of the amp before clippage

whereas most music resides in the -10db to -5db usually

(hence why my gain setting test tone is -4.6db, this gets music as loud as possible while still having some room for safety)

there are plenty of songs tho that hit for 1-3 seconds at one frequency at 0db, so it also has to do alot with song choice

okay it sounds like a tone will be my best bet. Im not sure what frequency to play. I can pretty much tell by ear what sounds loudest though

If you are doing a comp, most of the time you will be able to play a sweep and they will tell you at what Hz you where loudest at.
