1 18" Solo X Ported or 4 perhaps 6 12" sealed?

Recommended Posts

Which would you go for and why?

One 18" Solo X ported (lets say 7cft @33hz).

Four 12" subs SEALED. (something decent)

Six 12" subs SEALED. (cheaper options like MTX road thunder stuff)

Assuming all options get the same power! (2000 w rms)

Peace

I would personally go with the four 12"s sealed. You will most likely have a chance of getting better sounding subs if you spend the extra cash, plus all i've ever heard was that it takes way to much power to get the same output out of the solo x as compared to other setups on a smaller level. I have no personal experience of either, but i've read around quite a bit on 18"s. Just my $0.02. :)

And to go with the power problem, There not really good at getting low, there made more for comp. use than daily they start getting loud about 50hz. Im basing my opion on a friend who had 2 solo x 18's in his van and changed over to two DD 9518's and gained between 4-6 db's on a TL.. The sealed boxes are a good idea but a ported 18 will get loud as well, maybe change your brand to something that takes a little less power and a little more for daily use...

Maybe you should check out Steve Mick's van.

If you're going to put 2,000 RMS on whatever setup you decide, I would do the 6 12's sealed. The Solo X is rated at 5,000 RMS, you wouldn't even be feeding it half power.

Is this going in the civic?

6 12's in a 6th order bandpass.. just clamshell it and it should fit. ;)

Any time you have have a power wire next to your frame put some rubber hosing (or cut up an innertube) around it. The wire is bound to wiggle (due to driving or flex) and the casing will eventually wear through.

either of the setups would be pretty loud, try to do 4 12s ported if you're worried about room

Okay so im ditching the SOLO X idea, cause there's no way im gonna get 5000watts in my little civic right now. (Electrical)

Im in doubt between the 4 12's ported and 6 12's sealed. I want my stuff to be loud but sound good at the same time. (Flat response curve)

Maybe i should get 6 12s and make a sealed box at first and when i change my mind make it a ported box?

I want to know if the extra 2 12s' cone area would make a big difference!

Thanks for the replies people!
