ISO Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 This was one hell of a find, a Kicker 160ss amplifier new in the box from 1996. I was just scrolling through Ebay and found somebody that has or had a few Kicker amps that are from 1996 the only year the ss amps were sold. This person also has a X100s high current monster also new in the box but is wanting more than I'm willing to pay. Well I couldn't help myself and had to hook it up and was curious at how it would sound compared to the amps that are being produced these days and the most recent amp (Kicker KX400.1) that I had heard on my L7 10 that is usually what I test amps with so I'm pretty familiar with how it sounds and I must say that there was a night and day difference in sound. The 160ss KILLED as far as sound quality was concerned in my opinion. All I can remember is how much I was ready to be done testing the KX400.1 when I was listening to it. The 160ss had reminded me about how well a L7 could sound. The bass was very,very tight and accurate, I was hearing details in the bass I had not heard in a long time and I did not want to shut it off. EDIT: I forgot to mention that the KX400.1 was ran at 4 ohm. Tomorrow I'm going to listen to another Class A/B amp that is in production now and see if it sounds as good since the last 5 or so amps I have listened to all have been Class D but overall I'm impressed with this older amp and if I could get/afford 3 more 160ss's I would not hesitate about running them on my 4 L7's. Thanks but it doesn't seem that this oldschool stuff is near as exciteing as the new stuff. LOL your the only comment I have received. 01 S-10 Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 Man that brings back some good memories! This is from the time period when I really started getting into car audio. Don't get me wrong the equipment being made today is awesome, but there was just something special about the stuff from the 90's that I don't feel with today's equipment. TDH FTW !!!
