you could just make a wall with an interchangable baffle and try out both setups.

Team S.M.D.

Maritime Car Audio- (2) 18" SSA ZCON D1

- American Bass 500.1

- 60 ft of 3/0

-480 Ah of battery

- (2) stock alternators (70 +90)

- Kenwood Excelon x-794, 4v preouts

car audio is just a LOT more complicated than "this amp does this power" or "this sub will be this loud". its like 2 + 2 = banana. (if that confuses you then you get the point) lol

damn you better do a really detailed buildlog... i have a 97 bonneville.. i'd love to wall it

never done anything with an interchangable baffle before.. not sure if i can do it.. i might just stick with the 4 15'' l7's after speaking to greg i was told by him that they can only do 1000-maybe 1500 rms.. thats the same as the kicker l7's.. but i can fit all 4 better then 3 18's. and probally get louder.. so i will probally just stick with the kickers and sell the 18'' sx's....

4 15'' kicker L7 subs ( only 2 being used right now )

1 kicker zx2500.1 ( another soon 2 come )

box is 9.5 cubic feet slot portd thur the back seat

1 kicker zx650.4 amp powering 4 10'' ev dl10x mids ( rear deck )

1 kicker zx350.4 power 4 8'' beyma 8mi100 mid/highs ( 1 on each door )

2 runs of zero gauge wire ( about 60 feet total. )

big 3 done in zero gauge kicker wire

3 runs of 4 gauge for voice amps and eq' and crossover

2 kinetik hc1800 batteries in the trunk and 1 optima yellow top under the hood

260 amp irragi high output alternator ( soon to be 2 alt's )

alpine cda 9856 ipod headunit

kicker kx3 3 way crossover & a old school alpine 3342 digital 11 band sound field processor eq.

Cone Area of a Subwoofer 101

ROUND SUBS

π x R x R

Since the surround of the sub takes up 1" on both sides, we subtract 2" from the diameter, leaving us with 16". The radius is half of that, so we have:

≈3.14 x 8 x 8

≈201.06

So the approximate cone area of the sub is 201 square inches. We multiply this times 3 for the 3 subs and we get:

3 x 201

603

So all 3 SX18's haev a TOTAL combined area of 603 square inches.

SQUARE SUBS

S x S

Once again, the surround takes up an inch on each side. A 15" side is now 13" long.

13 x 13

169

One 15" L7 has 169 square inches of cone area. Multiply that by 4:

169 x 4

676

So the 4 L7's have more cone area than the SX18's.

BUT I DON'T CARE ABOUT MATHS! I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MAH SUBZ!!!

ONE QUESTION FIRST!!!

From what I can see, nobody else asked:

What voice coils do these have? Kickers are either DVC 2 or 4, and the SX18's are the same. Here's the options:

L7's are Dual-2's and SX 18's are Dual-2's = Use the L7's

L7's are Dual-2's and SX 18's are Dual-4's = Use the L7's

L7's are Dual-4's and SX 18's are Dual-2's = Use the SX18's

L7's are Dual-4's and SX 18's are Dual-4's = Use the L7's

And, before somebody else posts it, here it is:

wtf is lolcats?

I'd def get a fat hooker if i had to resort to that kinda thing. I feel like they'd be grateful and work harder. Also its more bang for my buck, more real estate for my dollar if you catch my drift. its like the Costco of streetwalkers.

I was hoping for 150 :(.

I was hoping she would let me put it in her butt

Well take 4 X 15 and you get 60 and take 3 X 18 and you get 54 i know thats not the right way to figure it out but im bored lollz xD

That's a pretty huge fail right there my man :o

To simplify the cone area thing...

(Let's assume the subs are '15s' and '18s' so no surrounds or anything, for simplicities sake!)

4 Kicker 15" square subs = 15x15x4 = 900 square inches

3 RE 18" round subs = 3.141x(9x9)x3 = 763 square inches.

Now, if you were hung up in cone area you would think the Kickers would win. But IMO 3 SX18's on a total of 7.5kw is going to smash the crap out of 4 L7 15's on 5kw total.

They will warm up pretty fast though...
