Port or Not?

If you're a basshead than ported won't have enough output let alone sealed. You might as well seal them and complain about it until you buy a better sub with 1500-2000w in a ported box. 200W each in a sealed box just isn't going to cut it so definetly port them unless you're shooting for SQ. Higher power & sealed boxes work fine for output and you get to keep your SQ/response. If you want something better why don't you sell what you have and buy 2 Type-R's and port them? They're like $100 each and a 1000W amp is about $200, you could already have 1/3 the $ if you sell what you have now. If you want to make money quick, buy some MDF and make a sweet ported box for a really good sub and sell it to someone for $300, there's someone out there that'll pay that. Materials $50/profit $250, your stuff is paid for.

Psh... We all know nobody can do hairtricks with sealed boxes. That's clearly 'shopped. I mean, Meade runs ported boxes, so why shouldn't everyone?

I didn't say sealed can't get loud, but it won't be on 400W with 2 sealed 12's. I can only judge on the crap systems I've had, the first was a comparable 2 12" RF P1s sealed in 1.25cf3 each, sharing 300W in a Buick trunk and I was really disappointed. I had likeable bump when I upgraded to a ported 12" on 600W, there was a huge difference and it was +$200, well worth it, that's when stuff started shaking and I didn't constantly want to switch. Decent output for rap music for youngin's requires something like that. You can't beat those $99 ebay Alpine's and used 1000W amps.

The guy's in the UK so his selection is probably a bit more limited than ours (he may not be able to get Type Rs and whatnot for cheap).

I'll tell you this, in my SUV I have an Alpine Type E 12" that I've had for like 5 years in a ported box on 300 watts and it sounds pretty good. Output-wise I was pretty surprised when I put it in the ported box. I'd recommend he port it and then save up for a quality woofer/woofers if he wants to upgrade down the line.
