To view the display on the laptop the hand held has to be connected. SPL-Lab does offer a simple meter that connects directly to your laptop. It's also a little bit cheaper. I opted for the LCD Bass Meter so I wouldn't have to worry about dragging out my laptop and making sure it was fully charged and all that nonsense. I'm just lazy that way and can't plan far enough ahead to have everything ready just to meter my system. MNZNeal: I think the range is 20Hz-120Hz 125db-165db. I purchased my direct from www.SPL-Lab.ru Price was $330 I opted for the international express shipping. It was $55 and I got it in 7 days. Destram mentioned a group buy. Feel free and check it out.
