What to check for

Recommended Posts

An alpine type r that my friend has installed in his car just stopped working yesterday. What are things I should check for when I take it out of the box. My plan so far is to use a 10" sub i have and wire it to his amp to determine if its the amp thats messed up. If that isnt the problem then I was gonna check his tensils on the sub. I just need a few more troubleshooting tips.

Che k the wires and fuses.  Use a DMM on the terminals of the sub to check the coil.   Smell for anything stinky/burnt.  Then if you still want plug your sub into the Amp

If it straight up stopped playing, I'd check the visuals first. Amp turning on, fuses, obvious disconnections, etc.

If all's well there, check the impedance of the box terminals, should be 1 to 4 based on your coil configuration.

If you're getting O/L (overload meaning no connection) or 0 (dead short), then pull the sub out and check the internals.

My method is get the easy stuff out of the way before jumping right in.

Need an install? Hit me up.

I havent gotten to his car yet but he says when you turn it up the sub cuts off but if its played at low volume it stays on... Does that help narrow anything down? I dont feel like going over there just to come back home and realize i didnt do the one troubleshooting idea that i shouldve.

sounds like a low voltage issue. could be alternator or battery taking a dump, or shitty ground... or clipping on the amp...
