how does a ho alternator work

Recommended Posts

ok so heres the low down... i recently bought a 300 amp ho alternator from iraggi and took it to a local shop to get it tested, just to see if they could... they told me it was a 135 amp alternator :s i was like ok w/e there machine cant test this alternator so i just ignored that... so then he goes on to tell me that this alternator housing is off of a lexus (i bought it for a 95 civic) and then proceded to get a lexus alternator off of the shelf at his shop... and compared them both. now i have faith in dom not to rip me off thats not the problem but the looked IDENTICAL (from the outside) the coils looked the same housing mine had very minor machining so that one bolt could wrk with my bracket. now with all thats said how does a ho alternator work cuz i thought the coils made the current and if they look the same how can mine produce 300 amps??

Your case has nothing to do with the output. I have a case from a GMC truck in my PT Cruiser.

The majority of the machining is in the brackets. He doesn't do much with cases if he doesn't have to.

The case doesnt matter.

The internals is what matters. Larger diodes, more windings. If you open it up and compare, you can see.

But you will mainly see the difference when you test it.

just like how people put gm in ford and vice versa. a guy tried selling me a gm case alt and showed me how it worked, it is real fascinating tbh.

ok thank you guys for giving me insite on the case problem... but both the coils look the same? is there obvious difference between the coils?

im not an expert, but i believe that maybe there is a difference in the way its made to spin. it may spin faster creating more current?also what i have been told buy many manufactures of alts,is you have to look at the output at idle. just like amps, look at rms not max. i have a 275amp alt but it only does 140 at idle.always ask for the idle output before you buy,you may never achieve the 300amps but its possible thats why they advertise it that way.

The amps at idle are inversely proportional to the max amps. Generally alts are rated by their output at 2000 engine RPMs. The smaller pulleys spin much faster than the engine and spin differently on different vehicles.

The link in my first post shows a video of how the alternator works. I suggest everybody watch it.

so a 300 amp alt will make 1/300th of an amp at idle?

haha sorry i think that terminology was a bit off

foot in mouth. i just got it

smaller alts will produce more output at idle than larger amps

sorry for doubting you Neo haha
