My alternator perils continue (sp?)

Recommended Posts

So puting my alt back in to go to work and the cooling.shroud wont stay on right. So I noticed there is lime a tab that clicks to the bottom of the alt. Long story short the tab snapped no big deal and when. It did I slipped And shorted the alt posi post against the block. Battery negative was disconnected btw anyway it sparked on me..... so I connected everything back up. Car starts under the Hood at the front bat measutes 14.x volts.

An a side idk if its change in temp because iys been raining all morning but my subs sound much louder than normal. And when I start my car the voltage reads like 14.5 but now it reads 14.1

Ill check the fuse for the alt under the Hood I think its in that fuse box under the Hood anyway.

What do you think. Am I Lucky or am I in trouble?

I did the same thing when i did my big three, i had to get a new alt and fuse, but it's probably just your fuse

hmmm idk i started up just fine and read 14.5v like normal, and pounded all the wayy home... i swear my subs are much louder than before,

the grouding bar for the alt was only secured finger tight.... idk why, of course i tightened it up good when i put it back together...

is it possible the alt is fine or...

i guess if the alt is broke and isnt charging ill find out sooner or later right, when my bats die and my car does too?

what you think?

So your saying when you first started the engine it was at 14.5 then after a while of the engine running it went down to 14.1?? If so thats to be expected since when the alternator heats up it becomes a lil less efficient therefor causing what you are talking about.

yea sorta im saying when i crank over and the first number to read on vm were 14.5 and since i shorted it, on startup i was reading 14.1, but coming home from were back to 14.5 all these immediatley after cranking over..

normal driving all the way home.. 14.2 normal

i mean it seems ok, but i guess i should get it tested just to be safe

alternator out,

31982_448371967795_527012795_5870792_7927601_n.jpg

with the a/c running

lights on, highbeams on

stereo up a lil

sitting parked in the drive @ ~ 1000 rpm

volatge in car reads 14.5v

at front bat under the hood it reads 14.6v

looking good i guess

but it only took me like 20 min to take it out,

this time i immediatley removed the grounding bar to prevent another mis hap

im taking it up to autozone right now.

they might not be ok at for testing h/o alts, but normal one right?
