power resistance question

  1. 1. How many amperes can a 5/16 or 8mm steel bolt 1/2" long handle before heat buildup becomes an issue? Say for passing power through a firewall. This will be almost 1 foot away from the exhaust manifold with moving air.

if you got it well insulated and the distance from ring terminal to ring terminal is short, it can handle as much as you want to give it really. take a look at the inside of a fuse and see how small the connection in there really is.

Granted that little small connection is designed to melt apart at a certain point - it is 1/10th the amount of metal in the bolt you're looking to use, and longer then you'll likely have your ring terminals placed.

Now about WHY you would want to do such a thing? It makes no sense to do this and is just asking for trouble.

For one, I wouldn't use steel, I would use brass. It has way better conductive properties and corrosion resistance. 5/16 bolt, it would depend on how long the bolt is, basically how much metal is there, but over 200 amps shouldn't be any kind of issue.
