Port Size & Port Noise... Where Does It stop

Recommended Posts

I was just curious what size ports are on the edge of too small (to the point where port noise is a serious factor) for both round & slot ports. i tried to search this topic but mainly came up with port tuning instead of port noise.

from like 13-20 inches per cube of port area was always pretty good to me.. i ran 30 inches of port per cube for a while.. just under those numbers causes some breathing problems

The required port area will depend on the sub, the volume of air it can sweep (Vd), how much power you will use, and tuning frequency.

Using anything else to size the port is an estimate or guess. . .

You can use smaller ports if they are flared.

Current system:

1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s

Previous systems:

2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz.

1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.

dont forget also just because you have the right port area doesn't mean you wont have port noise. an example is a 10x10 port for 100sqin should have zero port noise. but if you make a long ass 50x2 slot port your gonna have a shit load of port noise.
