I bought a stereo a few months ago and realized that it's distorting my audio when the volume is turned up 85% or so. Usually 26-28 out of 35 volume number things. I play it for about 10 minutes while driving pretty loud just enough before it does distort. After ten minutes or so the volume sounds like it went lower but has a god awful distortion. I turn it down and it sounds lower then usual. I'll turn off the car and wait for my sister to get off work and then it seems normal again.

What can this be? I was thinking the headunit amp can not take it, so add an external amp. But I was also thinking that wouldn't be the problem and the headunit is a POS.

This didn't happen with my old cheap DUAL headunit. :\

well if it gets progressively worse after listening to it over a period of time, then i honestly dont know. for me, once i get around 27 its just starts gettin all distorted. not extremely bad, but its kinda noticeable.

my kenwood kdc-mp238's internal amp distorts my speakers at like volume 26. i added an external amp and used an oscilloscope to make sure i wasnt clipping the signal coming out of the preouts, and volume 34 out of 35 later, works good.

The stock amp will begin to overheat and begin distorting your speakers.
