bubinga08 Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 I'm about to install a new alternator rated at 300 amps and I want to know why I need a shorter belt. Would I will notice the difference with a shorter belt? I've been looking around the forums for info but nothing. It's over 9000!!!
tristan560 Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 You only need a shorter belt if it has a smaller pulley. You want to keep tention on the pulley but don't want it too tight as it will wear out the bearings quicker. 99 Jimmy SLT 4WD Systemless. 99 Grand Prix GTP DC XL 12 on 1.5k tuned lowwwwww.
Wilson Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 I'm going to venture a guess and say the new alternator must have a smaller pulley or something. The smaller pulleys are done so you can charge more efficiently at idle. Otherwise, you'd need the same length belt as before, right? Since you didn't have any replies, I thought I'd throw in my worthless opinion. Good luck on getting an educated answer. Alex K Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 smaller belt = faster rpms = more idle amps. 2006 Nissan Z Track. My Feedback Thread i used to think a band pass was something you were around your neck or something.
superdave07 Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 The length of the belt doesnt change anything except how tight the belt it, as does your tensioner. If the diameter of your new pulley is smaller you may need a smaller belt, if you cannot adjust it far enough. Other than that it makes no difference. Yes the smaller pulleys are used to help with consistency at idle. Hope this helps... Edit: a shorter belt wont change the rpms of the alt. Pulley size changes your revaluations per minute.. bubinga08 Posted July 9, 2010 Author Report Posted July 9, 2010 Thanks everyone for the quick replies , I got the idea now. I kinda figured that would be the only reason for a shorter belt. Again thanks. It's over 9000!!!

CanUFeelMe Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 Need to find out what rpm's the new alt does the best at, then find out what the rpm charge rate for your stock alt are... If they are around the same rpm for output then stick with the same size pulley, and if not you may have to purchase a smaller one 1999 Chevy S102 Sundown Zv3-10's1 Sundown saz-4500d2 sets of Sundown CS6.5 Comps.
