How much clipping is too much?

Recommended Posts

Ok, finally got another ipod today, and planned on ONLY putting un-clipped music on it. Get home and start checking some of my music, and almost all of it sets the clip indicator in audacity. Obviously when the wave is squared for a second or two, its bad, but how much is acceptable? I've looked at a few songs where the indicator looks REAL bad (almost the whole waveform is red) but zoom in all the way, and its only square for less than .0001 seconds. By the way, it would take...years...to watch all of my music on WMP lol, so I was hoping I could cheat and use audacity.

Side note-Probably a dumb question, but if you play a clipped signal at half volume or so, its still a bad thing to do right? I'm thinking just demo with good, clean tracks, but for daily listening, just don't go full power...

There is no such thing as going over 0dbfs in the digital world. Most clip lights are set to go off when they see 3 continues samples reaching 0dbfs.

Almost all music now adays will be slammed, and ontop of that, unless they played on the song going to mp3 in the mastering stage it will most likely have slight bits of clipping.

I don't know if I would trust the meters in audacity, they are not all the same. If you zoom in on the wave and you see 1-2 samples at 0db I would say your fine. I would even dare to say 5 or so samples your still fine. Nothing will be perfect, sadly. Also trust your ears.

This comes from someone who mixes, and dapples in mastering for a living. My output ceiling is almost always set to -.1dbfs. Everything has to be LOUD now adays to be competitive

edit-im retarded, i edited out the times lol. 2nd pic only shows .0002 seconds total

This is typical, like I said almost all music is compressed to hell nowadays. Most song will look like that.
