"Generator" fuse keeps blowing. need help badly

Recommended Posts

One night i had my system turned up fairly loud. evidently i blew a "generator" fuse, this was in my fuse box and comes stock with the car.

what this did was keep my alt from charging the battery, at all.

now there are a fair amount of people who have mustangs and more power than me. why is it i blew this little 20 amp fuse?

does it have anything to do with the fact that all my power wire is attached to the distribution block on the fuse box under my hood?

this really sucks because i cannot turn it up to loud at the risk of blowing that fuse. what can i do? why does no one else have this issue?

i have determined the problem is related to engine load. if i am getting on it (3k+ rpms) the fuse will blow

i measured the resistance of a couple things in comparison to my stock alt and the resistance is much lower on my HO

so is my alt bad?

i have been conferring with my dad and he has told me that this fuse is attached to the field wire which is what tells the alt to make more power or not. he says something is demanding more current than usual and that means more current is fed through the field wire causing it to blow.

i do not believe it is a short circuit. after putting my stock pulley on my HO alt, my rpms could go to about 4-4.5k before the fuse would blow. this tell me for sure that it has to do with the alt

my dad also seems to think that if we upgrade the field wire to a larger gauge it might help. honestly im not sure because this "field" concept is above my head at the moment.

I need some help, some insight as to why this is happening. even better i need to know how to stop it. my stock pulley on this alt is keeping my voltage at about 14.2 which is not where i want it.

please help me someone

what size fuse is your amps? If they're like a 60 or 8 0 watt amp fuse its demanding to much from that little 25 amp fuse. The solution: disconnect it from the fuse block and install an equil size relay or breaker it'll make your life alot easier. correct me if Im wrong anyone

this fuse isnt on my amplifiers. it isnt the big power wire from my alt to my amps that is the problem.

it is a control wire that is fused in my power distribution box that is labeled generator

maybe lik your pops said that wire may need to be larger to suppoet that bigger load?

That's why they don't deliver.

Yer ass better go sit along the side of the road and wait.

You can't expect them to travel up some dirt road in a hick / back woods town. Thats how horror movies start :D

I explain things very simply and use analogies in terms of Pickles, and grape drink, pool noodles and jackhammers...if you can't put 2 and 2 together there man, There simply is not much more I can do.

I'd bounce these ideas your pops had with other Mustang owners that have high current systems to ensure it is this one wire/fuse. Maybe a Mustang forum may be of service to you.

thats an idea
