Automatic transmission Problems

Hey everyone! I have a 1993 Toyota Camry 2.2L with v6 engine and recently i just checked the transmission fluid. Its all black, burnt smelling, and has little metal specs in there.... Also the transmission has been making a grinding sound when shifting into the next gear. And after 5 minutes of driving, it has the smell of burnt transmission fluid? The car has 290km on it and it has never been changed... Its and second hand car. Should i do a ATF flush? Or should i take it to a Toyota dealership? Please help!

ouch that means your transmission is likely to go soon if there are metal bits in there. alot of people dont recommend changing the ATF fluid because the dirt thats in the current fluid is what helps keep the transmission together and if you change it you are highly risking your transmission to "blow up".

i fail reading but is your car a manual/standard or an automatic? if its automatic then what i just said stays but i dont know if it still applies to standard transmissions.

Wow.... this sucks LOL =) Ill keep the fluid in there just in case. The metal bits are VERY VERY tiny. But ill check the fluid again and see if there were really metal bits, maybe it was my finger

well the grinding sound you hear is those little metal pieces coming off the gears. I wouldnt change fluid...to get into a little more detail about the fluid, Kranny's right, alot of mechanics believe that the metallic specks and dirt in the fluid make it thicker and provide a better connection with the gears...while it isnt good for a brand new transmission, it may be providing the gears with enough grip to still be able to shift.

But from what you have said, Id look into getting a used transmission soon.

ok thanks! i might as well buy a new car...... LOL i checked for a used transmission and i could only find one for $1000.... what a sad day

throw some lucas tranny fx in there might make it last a little longer

Drop the pan, change the filter. Refill and add lucas transmission fix. Temp fix but might make it last another 6months if you don't rag on it.

i had a buick tranny started comming out of gear

would be driving and then it would disengauge shut it off let sit for a minute and drive again then one day it totally stopped enguging did tranny filter lasted another day haha

ended up being a propen pin of some sort

call up the local junk yard.. can get a good tranny with a 3 month warrenty for decently cheap

Find some local junk yards you will probably find a decent transmission for cheap.

Also is you have any friends that have had some tranmission work done find out where they went... Was looking into getting one for my jeep soon, (dont really need it but i want to be on the safe side) Talked to one of my friends said that the place he went to charges $600 to rebuild your current trans or the same for a rebuilt (used) one to be put in... So word of mouth is another good way to find a good place.
