Ok, so as the title says I'd like to build a subwoofer for my senior project. I wanted to know if yall knew of any good sites, books, etc. that I could read up on. And if there was any people in eastern NC that could "mentor" me.

Do you mean build it from scratch or from parts?

I'd like to try my hand at designing/building one from the ground up, but I imagine that's out of my price range lol. So I was thinking that I would build a "hybrid" driver from various parts.

...Lol.

That is a pretty awesome speaker though.

Any time you have have a power wire next to your frame put some rubber hosing (or cut up an innertube) around it. The wire is bound to wiggle (due to driving or flex) and the casing will eventually wear through.

I've done that before, shop around for some different cool subs, some blown some not and mix and match the best from each. I'd keep the same motor and coil together though unless you want to get really tricky.
