Equnoxe Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 (edited) Hey everyone, im new to the forum, need some help. I want to install dual alternators in my truck, im removing the A/C, made a bracket, and will use the stock belt. i can't seem to find any concrete info. i want to have both alternators working together charging the whole system. I know that i could just go buy a HO alt and call it a day, but i off-road with my truck, and i eat through alts because they just get caked with crud. so i would rather spend less on a 130 amp with a nice warranty, then like 300 on one with a 1 year. plus the whole cool factor would be nice lol. the problem i have is how i should wire everything up... this is what it looks like right now. the truck is a 97 explorer with stock 130 amp alternator, harness has 2 wires (Green/Yellow) thanks guys this is what my system consists of. "Big Three" 50FT of O Gauge (Knu) 2 300Amp fuses (Knu) 2 Caps (3.5 and 2.0) 2 Optima Yellow tops and a 1000CCA Motomaster. hdorre Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Get rid of the caps and get more batteries if you need them. Also, you forgot grounds on the winch and lights he asked how to wire up the second alt. you did nothing to help him. why should he get rid of the caps? what is it hurting unfortunately i do not know how one should wire a second alt either, there are a couple topics in the electrical section that touch on it but never give a clear answer. i would pm or email mechman, iraggi, or dc power kyle on here. they all have their own sections so it shouldnt be hard to find them. i think they would be able to give you the best answer Quote -Matt2005 Dodge Magnum RTJVC KD-AVX1 2 PPI S580.2 Obsidian Audio ST1 Horn Tweeters PRV 8MB450s Audio Legion 3500.1D 2 RE MT 18s 360 ah LiFePO4 BatterySHCA 2/0 155.2 @ 29 hzKicker CVR 15's buildDD 3512e buildMini T-Line Build(6) 8s BuildNightshade 15s Wall BuildMagnum AB XFL 12s BuildNewest Magnum Build

Equnoxe Posted August 24, 2010 Author Report Posted August 24, 2010 (edited) thanks for the reply but I would rather not get more battery's and yea, it was just more to show what battery they go to, Grounds go back to the battery not the frame. Ive emailed a few people, and a couple companies, and been on a few forums but haven't gotten a reply yet. still searching... i didn't think this was going to be as hard to find a clear answer, seeing as many people have done this. im not only doing this just for myself though, I belong to a forum and many of the members would like to know how to do this, so im trying to find out, then write a guide so they can do it to their explorers. thanks for giving me some more names to follow Edited August 24, 2010 by Equnoxe Quote 146.00 DB in term-lab :stroke: 50FT of O Gauge (Knu) 2 300Amp fuses (Knu) 2 Capacitors 2 Optima Yellow tops and a 1000CA Motomaster. <-lol American Bass XD2000 (approx. 2500RMS at .67 Ohm's) 6 Sony Xplod's (in parallel with 8gauge) custom made ported enclosure (around 54Hz) Alpine SPR-13S all around MTX T4004 (like 200RMS) for now Sony WX-GT77UI double-din
Autruche Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 If you got the alternator from the same truck that you drive (IE: year, make, model, engine size) then I would think you could just get a second alternator plug and splice it into the wiring for the stock alternator, but I have no clue if you can do it like that. I'm looking into doing the same thing on the same truck, so if you do figure it out, let us know. Quote Need Test Tones/Sine Waves? CheezyMane13 Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Attach the alternator positive to each other and then have one lead go from each alternator positive to the main battery positive...then from there you have your runs from your main battery to the back batteries....make sure you do the big three and upgrade your stock alternator grounds Quote take baby steps, u cant do it all at once unless u have a roll of 100's big enough to choke a donkey 1998 Chevy Venture "Swagger Wagon" Kenwood Excelon KDC-X994 Headunit 3 15" Alpine Type R's in seperate T-Lines 1 RF T1500-1bd for 2 of the 15s 1 RF P1000-1bd for the single 15 3 sets of Hifonics Zeus ZXi6.5C Components( 1 more set to come for Front stage) 1 Hifonics HFi100.4 4-channel amp Stock alt for now (DC HO SPL 400A when funds come in,currently working on buying this) Stock battery and one Optima Redtop for now (looking at XS batteries) 3 15" Alpine Type R's (aka Swagger Wagon Build 1.0) Swagger Wagon Build 2.0 Youtube Videos

No, my latest install job is in a 97 explorer and the owner just want's to put a 2nd stock alternator in place of the AC pmup. I know alot about car audio and electrical, but I have no clue on alternators.
