Purpose of In Line Fuse

Recommended Posts

I'm about to install my new system and my old power wire never had a in line fuse on it. From my understanding the in line fuse is only for protecting the power wire from shorts that could cause a fire. However my new amp (Sundown SAZ3500D) does not have a internal fuse. On the amp it says to have a in line fuse installed. I will be later this spring upgrading my power wire to dual 1/0 AWG wire and will install in line fuses then. My question is... Do I need a in line fuse to protect my expensive amp. Or can it hold off till spring when I upgrade my electrical?

I wouldnt run any type of amp for any amount of time without proper fuses.

Guyz. . . doesnt the fuse hold back some current? i dunno just askin because the 0ga wire is much much thicker than a 300amp fuse

i think youre thinking of resistance and voltage. the added resistance might give a little bit of voltage difference, but it really isnt noticeable. fusing is also still a lot more beneficial than having to replace everything from a short.

what in the world are you talking about. A 300 amp fuse carries the same rating as a strand of 1/0 gauge wire over what I believe is a 15 or 20 foot run. i'm not going to look it up right now. The fuse is not to protect the amp. It is to protect the wire. if the wire experience a short without a fuse you have a fire and no car. If you are fused you have a popped 8 dollar fuse. if you are trying to pull too much current through a stretch of wire you have heat. heat leads to again fire. no fuse you again have a fire and no car. wiht a fuse you need a new 8 dollar fuse.

Id really like to know where you got that info from I know that some competitors dont use fuses becuase they have gained a tenth or two without one but in an everyday uncontrolled environment I'll stick to my fuses.

little resistance > vehicle/amp burning up
