i know someone who is selling a d3100, would it be a bad thing to mismatch the batteries ?

You can use whatever you want in the XS line. The only thing i wouldnt do is use 2 different brand batts. Like 1 kinetik and 1 xs.

4 D975s will actually give you more capacity than the 1 D3100, but as far as your question goes either choice will work fine. Shouldn't see much voltage drop with either choice. As said above you can mix the different size XS Power batteries and not have problems.

I would put the 4 975s in the back and squeeze the 3100 under the hood
