how to wire second alternator HELP ASAP PLEASE

Recommended Posts

also the alternator had two posts ready for wires...what are they both for?

One post is for Power and the other is for another ground, the alternator case itself is the ground, so you have a stud as well to wire to. You should have just that alternator(mechman) running to your rear setup, power and ground, so take a two runs of 0 gauge(power and ground) you have a stud for each on the alt(mechman) and run to the rear d3100. Be sure to fuse that power wire at both ends, leave the factory alt like it is. Done.

thanks alot AMI. that clears alot up. but does the alt need a pos and neg running from the alt to the battery? or can it just be grounded to the frame? is there a difference or is grounding to the battery better? ill add another fuse to the power wire. i only had one fuse coming right out of the power wire. so you say to also have it fused right before the battery? can you please explain to me why this is important so ill know for the future?

and if the alternator is being grounded to the battery, does that mean the amp should be as well? or does it not matter.

and if you can answer me this AMI, why is it that people say to do multiple runs?

Yes. It can be grounded to the frame, but best to go the battery to insure solid charging. Better at the battery. Yes fused before battery. So you don't burn your truck down if you are in an accident and the cable becomes pinched and shorts, also protect equipment like amps. Doesn't matter, well in some cases it does, rule here is more grounds is better then not enough, so if you ground amp to frame, make sure battery is grounded to frame as well. Why run multiple cables???? To help ensure optimal current transfer.

i will def vote for ya!

but i got an issue. the alt wasnt putting out power and my amp started to spark and POP when i turned everything on. I have a power and ground from alternator to battery. ground from battery neg to a bolt under the seat. seats have been removed. Amp, t3000 grounded to the battery. I turned the car off immediately. i plugged the amp to the stock alternator and stock battery and it turned on so i can only hope i didn't burn it up.

i think its user error so if I could get some more help please!

Did you have the alt plugged in? If the regulator wasn't connected, then you have a back feed, basically a big bottle neck. Just check all of your connections before you try again.

i used to think a band pass was something you were around your neck or something.

any updates on the situation?

im curious why you felt the need to seperate the charging systems...theres no need to isolate anything. i would run a positive 0 gauge from each of the alternator posts to the positive battery terminal. then run a 0gauge from the front battery positive terminal to the positive of the rear battery, and ground the rear battery to the frame. of course fuse, but its easy. let us know with your results.

i think you didnt have sufficient ground when the amp started sparking. if so im going to assume the amp fuses havent popped. i hate seeing discontinued T series amps getting hurt but you have to learn somehow, lol. im even thinking of selling my T4000s and replacing them with AQ3500s.

Tell me...does this smell like chloroform to you?
