A friend of mine recently came into some money and went out and broke the bank with a home theater system. He bought B&W speakers and I noticed that they all have dimples on their flared ports. Not sure what the purpose of this is or what it does in practice, but if a company like that does it there may well be some merit to the idea: In other news I was inspired by a few of the ideas in this thread and built a new box right after using some strategicaly placed flares. I missed my tuning by about 10hz on the low side, but it turned out to be the best sounding box I've ever built. It was total fail on the meter since it brought my tuning down about 16/17 cycles below my proper peak, but was definitely worth the wood. The dimples give the air coming i and out more surface area to move over...slowing the air down, therefore tricking it into thinking that the port is longer than it actually is. Kinda the same concept as stuffing a sealed enclosure with polyfil. Air travels more smoothly over dimples. less turbulence. source: Mythbusters Just say no to Ground Pounder Customs.
