    yes. thats why you want nassiurius snails. there are pockets in the sand that can release toxins back into the water causing your ammonia to spike. ammonia turns into nitrite which turns into nitrate. which the process kills shit.

    yall got jokes. if your hermits are dying fast you have water params out of whack. What is your amm and nitrate levels? how often do you do water changes and how many fish do you have in that 10 gallon. Also did you do a full cycle? Id keep no more than two fish in a ten.

    The sand is there for your biological filter. You want it. There are people who run bare bottom but re sand does serve a purpose. Don't stir up your sand either. Get some critters that'll do it
